10 Signs of Elder Abuse

- Injuries such as bruises, sprains, broken bones, scratches- any unexplained marks.
- Signs of restraint, such as rope burns, gag marks, or welts.
- Signs of neglect, such as bedsores, soiled clothes or bedding, malnutrition, dehydration or unexplained weight loss.
- Injuries to the genital area or breasts, such as bruises, bleeding, or infection.
- Changes in behavior, such as depression, withdrawal, anxiety, agitation, failure to make eye contact, or trembling.
- Frequent arguments between the caregiver and elder, or verbal harassment, belittling or threats by the caregiver.
- Changes in living arrangements, such as previously uninvolved relatives or new acquaintances moving in.
- Caregiver intruding on elder’s privacy, refusing to allow elder to visit with anyone alone, removing doors to rooms, reading elder’s mail, obstructing religious practices.
- Changes in financial situation, such as unusual banking activity, unpaid bills, or standard of living being inconsistent with means.
- Elder expressing that he or she is being exploited or abused.
